Wilson Elementary Mission Statement & Beliefs
The mission of Wilson Elementary School is to prepare students to become successful, productive, respectful, and responsible citizens.
We believe…
ü       Student learning is a high priority and the responsibility of all members of the school community.
ü       Schools should provide a variety of opportunities that help students become lifelong learners.
ü       Our school environment should be safe.
ü       There should be mutual respect between teachers and students.
ü       Each student is responsible for his or her personal behavior and success.
Wilson Elementary School Parent Visitation Guidelines: We encourage parents to be active participants in their child’s education, including volunteering in classroom here at school.  As we invite community members to visit Wilson Elementary, we are also aware of the need to protect the security and safety of all students and staff.  For that reason, we will use the following guidelines regarding parent visitors to our school.

  1. All adults in the school must wear authorized identification badges, including administrators, teachers, aides, and parent volunteers/visitors.  These badges will indicate to both students and staff that an individual is authorized to be in our school.
  2. All visitors to the school must sign in at the main office upon arrival, and sign out when leaving.  At the time of signing in, visitors will be given an identification badge.  The badge will be returned to the office when the visitor signs out.
  3. Visitors who fail to sign in at the office and acquire a badge will not be allowed to interact with students, and will be asked to go to the office to sign in.
  4. Students are asked not to bring student visitors to school.
  5. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in the loss of school visitation privileges.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Wilson Elementary School office at 755-2340.

  3. Parents may pick up their children in the kiva and lobby areas of the school.  We request that they not wait in the hallway outside their child’s classroom.
The following procedure should be followed when checking students in or out of the building:                                              1. Students must be checked out at the office by a parent or guardian, or other individual listed in the student’s emergency contact information.
2. Individuals checking out students are asked to wait in the office area while the secretary calls the classroom to release the student and have him/her come to the office.
Students must first check in at the office when they are late for school or return to school after checking out.
Emergency Parent Check-Out ProceduresIn case of an evacuation of the school, the following procedures will be used for checking students out to their parents.

If students are evacuated from the building, but remain on school grounds, the following procedures will be used.
  • Teachers and students will line up in their pre-assigned locations on the field on the west side of the school.
  • Tables will be set up at the openings on the west, north, and south sides of the field, where parents may check out their children.  These tables will be manned by the following people: North table: office secretary, the media specialist, parent liaison.  South table: literacy coach, media aide, computer specialist.  West table: Refocus specialist, PE specialist, Office secretary.  These are the only locations from which students will be allowed to leave
  • Parents will check their students out with the personnel at the table.  As they are checking them out, specialists, aides, or other school personnel will go to the student’s class and escort the student to their parents.  The parent will remain at the gate. When the child leaves with their parents, the personnel at the tables will record that information.

If students are evacuated from the building, and congregate in the LDS chapel to the east, the following procedures will be used.

  • Teachers and students will line up in their pre-assigned locations in the church.
  • Tables will be set up in the doorways on the south-west, south-east, and north-east sides of the building, where parents may check out their children.  These tables will be manned by the following people: South-east door: office secretary, the media specialist, parent liaison.  South-west door: literacy coach, media aide, computer specialist.  North-west door: Refocus specialist, PE specialist, Office secretary.
Breakfast : A regular, reduced and free breakfast program is available to all students. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. Students may enter the building through the east door to the lunchroom.
District Wellness Philosophy: “The Logan School District promotes healthy living by supporting wellness, good nutrition and regular physical activity as part of the total learning environment.  The District supports an education where student learn and participate in positive dietary and lifestyle practices and also learn about the negative impact and cost of poor nutrition and inactivity to both individuals and society as a whole.  Improved health optimizes student performance potential and supports the philosophy that no child is left behind.”

We at Wilson School strive to provide a school environment where students can develop attitudes and habits that will promote life-long wellness.  A copy of the full Logan City School District Policy on Student Nutrition and Wellness can be obtained in the school office.
Acceptable Use Policy: With Internet access comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be educational value in the context of the school setting. Precautions have been taken to restrict access to objectionable materials. However, it is impossible to control all material and a user may discover controversial or inappropriate information. We believe that the valuable information and interaction available on the Internet outweigh the possibility that users may obtain objectionable material.
Internet access in Logan City School District is a privilege and not a right. Violation of any of the guidelines or prohibitions listed in Acceptable Use Policy can result in disciplinary or legal action.
We require all students and their parents to sign a consent form for school Internet access. A complete copy of the Acceptable Use Policy is available at the office.
Attendance: The Utah Compulsory Attendance Act requires students to attend school regularly. Regular and prompt attendance is the responsibility of the student and the parent/guardian. The Board of Education recognizes illness, injury, family emergency, and death in the immediate family as legitimate reasons for absences. The law does not give a parent/guardian the right to excuse a student from school for other reasons.
Parents/guardians are notified when a student has excessive absences, regardless of the reasons.  The notifications will be as follows: 5 absences = phone contact from the school; 8 absences = letter contact from the school; 12 absences = letter contact from the district office. Parents who do not contact the school about the absences will be referred to the district.  Parents may also receive notification from the district office if their child has more than 6absences in a quarter.
The night before or the day of the absence (by 10:00 a.m.), parents/guardians should call the attendance hotline (755-2341) and leave a message to clear the absence. A written explanation to the teacher should be sent with the child upon his or her return
Busing: The state provides transportation for K-6 students living beyond 1.5 miles from school. Students who are not eligible for bus service may pay for bus service by joining with other students in the area to rent a school bus to serve their neighborhood. A community to coordinate collecting fees and bus routing. The cost of the rented bus will be determined by adding the number of miles and minutes of the route by the current state reimbursement rates. Money will be collected by the community spokesperson and paid to the Cache Transportation Department on or before August 8th.
Policy on Appearance and Dress: Logan City School District believes that high standards of personal grooming and dress contribute to a positive school climate.  The purpose of a dress code is to encourage personal appearance that supports a favorable, positive teaching/learning environment.  School dress and personal grooming should be appropriate for the educational experience and school activities.  Clothing which does not detract from nor interfere with appropriate school conduct, safety, and participation shall be considered proper school attire.
Personal Appearance and DressAdherence to appropriate dress and grooming expectations is the responsibility of the student and parents.  Case law provides discretion for building administrators when defining appropriate dress.  Enforcement of the standards is the responsibility of the parents, school staff, and administration.  Each school will develop guidelines and implementation procedures under this policy.
Clothing should be neat, clean, and must cover underwear completely.  Gang clothing or inappropriate insignias, phrases, or mottos will not be allowed on campus.
Hair should be clean and well groomed.  Distracting appearance and/or abbreviated clothing is considered unacceptable for school wear.  Specific items may be prohibited at the school site.
Students are expected to be outside during class and lunch recesses. They need to wear clothing that is suitable for being outside.  During inclement weather this may include closed-toe shoes, a jacket, and long pants.
Homework: Homework should be a part of every child’s regular school day, including reading to/with an adult for 20 minutes each day.  Parents should contact their child’s teacher whenever the student is absent, in order to collect assignments so student may complete the missed work.  A brochure explaining our district's policy on homework is available at the office.
Fees: The Utah Constitution prohibits the charging of fees in the elementary schools. That means K-6 students cannot be charged for textbooks, classroom equipment or supplies, field trips, assemblies, snacks (other than food provided through the School Lunch Program), or for anything else that takes place during the regular school day.
If you wish to purchase school pictures, yearbooks, or similar items through the school, those costs are not fees and will not be waived. Also, if your student loses or damages school property, the costs of replacement or repair are not fees and need not be waived.
The school may ask you for tax-deductible donations, but the school cannot require donations and no child may be penalized for not making donations.

Field Trips: Field Trips must be organized and planned so they directly relate to the curriculum in an articulated and coordinated manner. They may be used to place a variety of civic, cultural, community, and business resources within reach of the classroom. All field trips must be approved by the principal. Notification of the field trip should be given to parents well in advance of the activity (at least two weeks prior to the activity.) Students who participate in field trip activities must have a district release form signed by a parent or legal guardian. Parent or legal guardian approval by phone is not acceptable.
Library: The Media Center is well stocked with a wide variety of books and materials. It is a quiet place for group story hours as well as a place for individuals to get the help and books they need when searching for information.
Students may check-out books before and after school when the librarian is there to help them. They may also check-out at other times when they have permission from their teacher and when the library staff are not busy with classes.
If a book is lost and remains lost for a number of weeks, the student will be asked to pay for it. If the student later finds the book, he or she may bring it in and receive a refund.  Students who misbehave or who deliberately damage library property will lose privileges and may be required to pay for damages.

Lunch: We are diligently and constantly working toward good table manners, courtesy and proper lunchroom behavior. We appreciate you cooperation and support in this regard.
A regular lunch program is available to all students. Application forms for participation in the reduced or free lunch program are available in the office.
We request that children do not "charge". Parents may call the office and request information about their child's lunch account. Lunch money will be accepted at the office prior to the start of school.
The following statements are intended to promote proper lunchroom behavior.
1. "Walk, please."
2. "Please sit on the bench with your legs under the table."
3. "Thank you for keeping the floor and table clean."
4. "Please eat your own food."
5. "Please do not take food out of the lunchroom."
6. "Please ask for help if you spill your food"
7. "Saving places for other is not allowed. Sorry!"

Nuisance Items: Any item brought to school that becomes a distraction will be kept in a safe place with the principal until the parent has a chance to come and pick it up.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices: Per Logan City School District policy, student posses/use of a cell phone is prohibited during the school day and in the school building.  Communication with parents/guardians is facilitated through the school office.
We also ask that students not bring other electronic devices to school, including MP3 players and personal video game players.  Because of distractions the devices cause, they and student cell phones will be treated as nuisance items, and the same procedures for returning them to the student’s parents will apply.
Records: Information for emergencies is critical. Please notify the school immediately when changes occur in addresses, telephone numbers, or emergency numbers. Changes in names given for emergencies or for custodial reasons need to be given to the school promptly.
Parents have a legal right to request a conference with Wilson school officials to see and/or obtain a copy of the school records of their children.
Registration: It is the parents responsibility to provide appropriate records during registration. It is necessary for the school personnel to see you child's birth certificate and immunization record. It is a law that all children entering school in Utah must have the following immunizations: 4DPT (5 are required if the 4th dose is given before the 4th birthday.), DT, or 3 Td shots; 3 or more doses of polio vaccine; 2 doses of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR).
State law requires that all new transfer students from outside the state of Utah receive a TB test upon enrollment. Children without physician or health department records of adequate immunization will not be admitted to school.
Parents must report to the school office to register a new student. The principal will notify the assigned teacher that a new student has enrolled so that the teacher can organize materials and prepare an appropriate welcome for the student. The principal or the school secretary will introduce the new student to his/her teacher at the start of the next school day.
Classroom Rules: No student is permitted to keep a teacher from teaching or to keep other students from learning. Students are not allowed to do acts that will harm themselves, harm others or damage property.

A necessary classroom rule of conduct is one that serves at least one of the following purposes:
1. To maximize on-task behaviors and minimize off-task behaviors, especially disruptive behaviors.
2. To secure the safety and comfort of the learning environment.
3. To prevent the activities of the class from disturbing other classes and persons outside of the class.
4. To maintain acceptable standards of decorum among students, school personnel, and visitors to the school.
Class rules, guidelines, and procedures for behavior are determined by the teacher, but teacher determinations are influenced by student participation and recommendation.
Safe Schools Policy: "Safe Schools" refers to the belief that all students have an opportunity to learn in an environment which is safe, conducive to the learning process, and free from unnecessary disruption. The Utah Legislature passed a law which requires school districts to develop a conduct and discipline policy for all students. The following provisions govern the conduct of school age individuals in the Logan School District policy:
A. Students shall:
1. Be given notice of applicable rules of conduct
2. Comply with applicable rules of conduct,
3. Show respect for other people and obey persons in authority.
B. Students may not:
1. Possess weapons or any replica or facsimile of weapons, or other material dangerous to persons or property, regardless of intent and whether functional or non-functional,
2. Cause damage to personal or real property or cause harm to others,
3. Commit an offense against an educator.
School preventative strategies for improving student behavior and limiting the expulsion or suspension of students from school align with district policy. We will follow the procedures for incidents involving weapons, drugs or imminent danger to people or property outlined in the district policy.
Safety: Students are expected to always follow the school rules of Be Safe, Be Successful, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.  These rules are especially  important on the playground. These rules are followed when students:
1. Play only in designated areas.
2. Do not create inappropriate or excessive physical contact (i.e., grabbing, pushing, shoving, hitting, kicking, tackling, fighting, etc.).
3. Take turns on playground equipment (swings, tetherballs, slides, etc).
4. Stay outside until they are called in by their teacher due to limited hall space and no classroom supervision during lunch.
We encourage students to ride bicycles to and from school. Upon arrival at school, the bicycles should be placed in the bike racks and left there until after school. Students who wear helmets and follow biker courtesy rules stay safer.

Sports or games that involve unnecessary or excessive contact may not be played by students unless the teacher is on the playground with the children and is willing to take responsibility for the supervision of the activity.

It is against Logan City ordinances for students to throw snowballs or any other "projectiles."

Students are not automatically covered by accident insurance while attending school. If you are interested in a student accident insurance program, please contact the office.
Student Educational Planning (SEP) Conferences
Student Educational Planning (SEP) conferences are the school's major means of reporting and celebrating pupil progress and setting goals. Parent-teacher conferences may be scheduled any time during the school year by either the parent or the teacher to discuss individual concerns. Appointment should always be made with teachers so that the conferences will be private and objective. SEP conferences are scheduled twice a year. Parents and children, except for kindergarten, are supposed to attend these conferences. Teachers will notify parents of their appointment.

Telephones
The secretary or an office aide is available to take calls from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Students must have permission to use the telephone. Teachers are not available to take phone calls during classroom hours. Please be prepared to leave messages for teachers.
Lost and Found
We advise parents to label all items that might be lost by children. "Lost and Found" items are put on a table outside of the office. Clothing or other unclaimed articles will be donated to a charitable organization at the end of each term.
Treats and Snacks
Treats and snacks may be allowed within the confines of the classroom under the teacher's direction. No treats or snack will be allowed outside of the classroom or the cafeteria. Treats and snacks brought for class activities must be purchased (i.e., not homemade).

Videos in the Classroom
Videos may be used in school only for instructional purposes. Videos that are purchased or rented may be used according to the following requirements:
1. The video is shown in the classroom (i.e. non-profit public institution).
2. The video is shown by the teacher and the teacher is present with the students.
3. The video is a lawfully made and obtained copy.
4. Video materials that are rated" G" by the motion picture association and TV rating guide are the only videos allowed at Wilson Elementary.
A copy of the Logan City School District Video Materials Policy is available at the school.
